The fee for your anaesthetic is separate to the surgeon's and hospital fees and is based on the Commonwealth Medicare Benefits Schedule (incorporating the specific procedure, duration, procedures performed and complexity). The fee is divided into three separate components:

a) Medicare rebate

b) Private health insurance rebate

c) Patient co-payment

Private health insurance funds and Medicare cover the majority of the fee, although there may be an out-of pocket expense (to account for the short fall in insurer reimbursement). I keep this “gap” fee to a minimum for you by charging two thirds of the fee recommended by the Australian Medical Association.

Endoscopy and infusaports

No gap.

HBF and work cover accounts

No gap.

AHSA funds, Medibank and BUPA

Estimated gap fee $300-500. This specifics will be discussed with you in advance of your procedure.

Uninsured/NIB/International travel insurance

Full prepayment of the estimated total anaesthetic fee is required. These funds have either low rebate levels or complicated/restrictive regulations. This will be reimbursed in part by the health fund following your procedure.

A practice manager from Precision Anaesthesia ( will be in touch prior to the day of surgery to manage the billing process.
